Filter Review- Tiffen Soft FX 3
Recently I got the Tiffen Soft FX 3 filter (4×4 version) on eBay. I have always been a huge fan of diffusion filters ever since I first heard of them. The ability to retain a clear image without the sharpness of digital sensors and modern glass is amazing. Go back and watch Star Wars: A New Hope and you will see how soft it is compared to Star Wars Episode 7. Because diffusion filters were a staple, now, not so much. With different ratings of strength and different styles of filters, there is a filter for you! Enough about filters in general, although, I most likely will make an “intro to diffusion” review/video in the future.
(if you would like more examples of the filter you can watch the video review here)
The filter was too strong for my liking. Tiffen’s Soft FX line is a generic diffusion filter. It blurs the whole image with some pretty hefty halation in the highlights. I prefer a much more muted effect with minimal halation like the Black Satin filters. That being said, I think this filter could be used very effectively as a close up filter. I will use this filter on medium shots when there are no strong highlights. Diffusion is super subjective and everyone has their preference. But for me, this filter is too strong in general. Although, it will be nice to have it in my kit for those rare scenarios when I need a stronger strength diffusion.
